In his paintings, Grotjahn interweaves modes of abstraction, exploring color, perspective, seriality, and the sublime while reflecting on the history of nonrepresentational painting. In the Backcountry series, whose title refers to the artist’s ski touring and fly-fishing activities in Colorado, he alludes to rural landscape and explores the expressive possibilities of paint, experimenting with mark making, color, and texture, and combining systematic structure with gestural spontaneity.
