This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Christopher Wool at Gagosian, Beverly Hills. The new works on view continue Wool’s exploration of painting techniques, using spray paint, silkscreen, and hand painting to create tension between painting and erasing, gesture and removal, depth and flatness. Introducing hues such as pink and brown, most of the works are single-color canvases.
The catalogue includes tipped-in color plates of the paintings along with black-and-white photographs by Wool of the installation and a billboard he designed for the show. An essay by musician and writer Richard Hell reflects on the compelling quality of Wool’s works, noting that they feel like “paintings of paintings—while still making paintings as paintings.”
