Simon HantaĂŻ: Les blancs de la couleur, la couleur du blanc

This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Simon Hantaï: Les blancs de la couleur, la couleur du blanc at Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, New York. The title of the exhibition—the gallery’s second solo presentation of Hantaï’s work since announcing its representation of his estate in 2019—alludes to the artist’s use of white in several series. The featured paintings were made using his characteristic pliage (folding) technique, in which a canvas is crumpled and knotted, painted over, and then unfolded to reveal a pattern of alternations between pigment and ground.

Housed in a custom-made box, the publication includes a large-format saddle-stitched book featuring an annotated essay and illustrated chronology by the exhibition’s curator, Anne Baldassari, as well as archival photographs of Hantaï in his studio and at home. The box also contains eighteen unbound color illustrations documenting the works in the exhibition and a folded poster of Tabula (1980), a painting in primary yellow.
